Cancer is a complex and heterogeneous disease that arises from the disruption of normal cellular functions through genetic or epigenetic changes. To better understand the underlying mechanisms Hanahan and Weinberg created a list of 11 cancer hallmarks and two enabling traits which include: self- sufficiency in growth signals, insensitivity to anti-growth signals, evading apoptosis, limitless replicative potential, sustained angiogenesis, tissue invasion and metastasis, reprogramming energy metabolism and evading immune response, and the two enabling traits: genome instability and mutation, and tumor-promoting inflammation.
